GIS on the server

Palladium has developed GIS-enabled web applications which are just as powerful and responsive on someone's desktop in Houston as they are dialed-in from a hotel room in Africa. Geoprocessing of gigabytes of data can take place in centrally located datacenters where massive databases and multi-processor systems can be maintained cost-effectively. Users get a built-to-purpose web application, allowing them to concentrate on the process at hand, rather than how to use a general purpose GIS application like ArcMap.

When GIS applications involve a few megabytes of shape files or satellite imagery, desktop-only solutions using ArcMap are appropriate.
